Abstract
381,028. Pencil-holders &c. HIRTH, A., Haus Abendrot, Heiden, Switzerland. Dec. 21, 1931, No. 35290. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1930. [Class 146 (iii).] In multiple pencil holders in which all the separate lead holders are displaceable separately from position of rest to position of use, they are returned to position of rest by a common compression spring, one end of which spring is housed in the pointed end of the pencil case and the other end has a tubular skirt. The lead holders consist of tubes 3 in which the leads are slidably mounted so that, by rotation of the tubes about internal threaded rods, the leads may be advanced. The rear ends of the holders are riveted to guide-plates 13, and to the forward ends of the guide-plates are fastened leaf springs 14 which on their other ends bear operating knobs 15 passing through holes in the guide-plates and the rough slots 17 in the outer casing 1 of the pencil holder ; the knobs may bear marks to indicate the colour of the corresponding lead. Two guide rivets 18 are also mounted on each guide-plate and slide in the slots 17 on either side of the operating knobs 15. The shanks of the operating knobs have narrow parts which fit the normal width of the slots 17, and wider parts which will only pass through enlarged portions 19, 20, 21 of the slots. With a lead holder in the inactive position the knob rests in the enlarged part 19, but, by pressing the knob against the action of the spring 14, it is positioned so that the holder can be advanced until the knob engages the enlargement 20, when the holder is in the position of use. The holders are returned to the inactive position by the action of a common spring 32 mounted between plates 33, 34 in the spring, which is compressed by whichever of the holders is advanced. The enlargements 21 of slots 17 are provided to enable the holders to be disengaged from the casing, when necessary. In the normal way, the rearward movement of the holders is arrested by a shockabsorbing washer on the bottom of a refill box 24. The box 24 is mounted on the rear cap 22, which is normally held in place by a bayonet slot 29 and serves to cover the enlargements 21, when desirable.
