Abstract

173,706. Southin, C. S. Feb. 11, 1921. Beam compasses for blackboard or general use comprise a bar having at one end a spring or band clip to hold a chalk &c., a head carrying a centre-point being slidably mounted on the bar. As shown in Figs 1 and 2, the bar 1, which may be graduated, carries at one end a spring clip 2 adapted to hold a chalk &c. 4, the bar being formed with a groove 5 forming a seating for the chalk. The sliding head comprises a tubular member 6 held in position by a spring 7, the bentdown end 8 of which constitutes the centre-point. The member 6 is provided with a, handle 9 which may have a rotary part 10; a second handle 11 may be mounted on the bar. The spring 2 may be provided with additional recesses at the side of the bar to accommodate a drawing-pen and a pencil. the bar being formed with corresponding grooves. The single spring shown may be replaced by two springs secured to opposite sides of the bar, or by a band clip with a tightening- screw. The point 8, instead of being integral with the spring 7, may be a separate member riveted to the part 6.
