473,818. Brass wind instruments. WORNELL, C. N. M. Feb. 16, 1937, No. 4655. [Class 88 (ii)] The finger-piece 6 of a piston-valve in a brass wind instrument has a skirt 9 which telescopes within or around a socket 10 secured to the casing. The return spring 8 may be contained within the socket and skirt, or between the walls of a doublewalled socket. In Fig. 3, the tension of the spring may be varied by a nut 17 on the valvestem ; or the nut may be arranged to act on the lower end of the spring. The ends of the piston valve may be rounded, and a lug on the piston, working in a guide slot, may be similarly rounded. Felt washers may cushion the action.
