472,980. Television. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and JONES, V. April 2, 1936, No. 9764. [Class 40 (iii)] In a television system wherein means are provided for generating and transmitting a periodic pulse the amplitude of which is proportional to the mean value of the picture brightness during the preceding inter-pulse period, the pulses being generated during the fly-back period of a cathode-ray scanning device, the grid of the valve 1 that receives the picture signals is connected to the grid of another valve 2, which is normally biassed beyond cut-off and the screening grid of which is connected to one end of a resistance 3 in the anode circuit of a second normally inactive valve 6. During the fly-back period positive pulses applied to the grid of the valve 6 unblock the same, and result also in the unblocking of the valve 2 and generation of a periodic pulse. In this period the picture signal is reduced to " black " or some other arbitrary value, and, since the grid of the valve 1 is associated with a condenser 8 and grid leak (not shown), the biassing potential imparted to the grid of the valve 2 is proportional to the average picture brightness during the preceding scanning period.
