Abstract

<PICT:0471005/IV/1> In a method of dyeing rayon cakes, a plurality of cakes 16, each wrapped in a pervious fabric 17, are assembled in end-to-end contact on a perforate cylindrical member 15 having a cake supporting flange 18 at one end. The cylinder 15 carrying the cakes is then inserted into a second cylindrical member 20 having an imperforate end, the open ends of the cylinders are closed by a cover 21, and the enclosed cakes are supported in a bath of dyeing liquor with the common axis of the cylinders horizontal. The dye is passed under pressure through the cakes between their inner and outer peripheries. The central portion of the cover 21 is depressed as at 22 and is provided with a fastening device in the form of a lock strap 23 which co-operates with a pair of inwardly disposed ledges 25 forming part of a helix on the interior surface of the inner cylinder 15. The cylinders enclosing the cakes are supported on horizontal, hollow, perforated spindles 14 mounted on the outside of a cylinder 12 suspended with its axis vertical in a tank 30 of dyeing liquid. The spindle 14 passes through holes in the imperforate bottom of the outer cylindrical member 20 and in the cover 21 and the perforated cylinders are held in position by a screw cap 13. A square boss 26 on the bottom of the outer cylinder cooperates with a square hole in the flange 18 to prevent relative rotation of the inner and outer cylinders. The dyeing liquor may be circulated either inwards or outwards through the cakes.
