Abstract
Uniform liquid treatment of yarn on a bobbin is effected by surrounding the bobbin with a casing and forcing treating liquor through the bobbin into the casing which is maintained full of liquor under pressure during the operation by ensuring a slow rate of escape of the liquor. The treating liquor may be a washing, bleaching or dyeing agent or a saponifying liquid for cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester yarns, and the yarn may be artificial continuous filament yarn and may be wound in cake or other package form. The hollow yarn package 35 on a bobbin 16, Fig. 2, is placed on a hollow perforated spindle 7 and the upper flange 19 of the bobbin is clamped against an upper flange 18 on the spindle 7 by a nut 15 on a screw-threaded part of the spindle 7 engaging in fluid-tight manner the lower flange of the bobbin 16. A casing 14 is held in position around the bobbin 16 by a clamping nut 11 on the screwed part of the spindle 7. Fluid is supplied to the interior of the spindle 7 from a feed tank 30, Fig. 1, and passes out through the perforations 10 in the spindle 7 when the spindle assembly is rotated by a driving wheel 8 near its upper end, under the action of centrifugal force. When the casing becomes full, the liquid in it reaches considerable pressure by reason of the slow rate of escape of liquor from the casing through three small perforations 21, liquor being supplied to make up for the flow from the casing. A guard 27 surrounding the upper end 26 of the spindle 7 and a guard casing 23 surrounding the spindle assembly drain liquor into a tank 25 from which it is returned by a <PICT:0433052/IV/1> <PICT:0433052/IV/2> pump 33 to the feed tank 30. The bobbin 16 is made of steel with a barrel comprising a number of bars of triangular cross-section with spaces between through which the treating liquid is thrown. A cylinder of gauze 38 may be placed between these bars and the yarn 35. A similar cylinder may be placed inside the perforated or slotted spindle 7 to distribute more evenly the treating liquor. The boring of the spindle 7 is tapered to fling downwards liquid entering at the top end 26 of the spindle.
