Abstract

470,353. Cycle brakes. PARKES, J., and SUN CYCLE & FITTINGS CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5725. [Class 136 (i)] In brake-operating mechanism for pedal cycles, of the type comprising a foot-actuated lever and a transmission rod, the lever comprises a bifurcated arm which straddles the transmission rod adjacent to a thrust-collar on the rod, against which collar the bifurcated arm abuts to effect the operating movement of the rod and the brake shoes connected thereto. As applied to a tandem bicycle, a bell-crank lever a is pivoted to a bracket b on a clip c secured to one of the chain stays d between the front and rear crank brackets. One of the arms a<1> of the lever is provided with a pedal a<3> to be engaged by the heel of the front rider, and the other, inwardly-bent, arm a<2> is forked to straddle the transmission rod f of the usual hand-operated mechanism of the rear brake, and engages the conical head of a thrust-collar f<1>, which is adjustable along the rod f and is locked in position by a grub-screw g<2>. In a modification, the bracket h is welded, brazed, &c. directly to the chain stay d.
