[Class 136 (i)] Brake mechanism for cycles &c. comprises a common control handle, pedal, or lever connected through one or more Bowden wire transmissions to all the brakes, and a secondary control means connected to one or more of the brakes through the same transmission, the arrangement being such that by the operation of the common control handle &c. all the brakes are operated, and by the operation of the secondary control means one or more of the brakes are operated independently. As shown, a control lever 1, connected by Bowden transmissions 2, 3 to the front and rear brakes of a bicycle, is mounted on a bracket 4 which is fixed on the handlebar 5 and is provided with stops 6 for the Bowden casings, the inner cables 11, 12, Fig. 2, passing through openings 9, 10. The cable 12 is anchored to the end 13 of the lever 1, while the cable 11 passes freely through an eyelet 14 and thence through a further length of Bowden casing 15 to a second lever 16, which thus operates one brake only. The lever 1 applies both brakes, the eyelet 14 moving the casing 15 and the cable 11 relatively to the stops 6. Both brakes may be provided with means for separate operation, in addition to the common control means. The cables may be bifurcated to operate brakes on each side of each wheel. One or more rigid tubes 18 may be inserted in any of the lengths of Bowden transmissions and fixed to the outer casing by nuts 19, thus minimizing small changes in the length of the outer casing when long lengths are operated.
