F o r c e - transmitting mechanism. - In a fourwheel brake system, a pedal 38 is used to actuate all four brakes, while the rear brakes are independently operated by a hand lever 50; the idler levers used in the transmission swing horizontally about vertical pivots. These levers 30, 32 for the front brakes are connected together by a rod or cable 36, and those 42, 44 for the rear brakes by a rod &c. 48. The lever 30 is also connected by a rod &c. 56 to a channelshaped link 58, Fig. 5, pivoted on one rear lever 42. The hand lever acts on the lever 42 through a slotted link 58, which allows actuation of the rear brakes by the pedal without disturbing the handle. The link 58 acts as a one way connection to allow the rear brakes only to be applied by the hand lever 50. If the hand lever is mounted on the left side of the vehicle, it and the rod 56 are connected to the left lever 44. Where the propeller shaft during running moves through a big arc the cross rod 48 cannot be used; it is replaced by a bell-crank 62, Fig. 7, mounted on the transmission gear &c. and connected to the two idler levers 242, 244, by rods 64, 66. All the rods &c. connecting the levers and brakes are in tension.
