Abstract

284,410. Needham, S. O. Oct. 29, 1926. Actuated or applied by running axle on wheel. -The anchor plate for the brake shoes or band of one wheel of a vehicle is rotstably mounted upon the axle casing and is connected by a transverse shaft to the operating cam of the brake on the opposite side wheel so that this brake is applied by servo-action from the first. In addition a front wheel brake may be arranged to apply or be applied by one of the rear brakes. An arrangement for a manually propelled tri- ,cycle is described and comprises a brake anchor plate A for one wheel rotatably mounted upon the axle casing B and connected by a link H to an arm J on a transverse shaft K mounted in bearings on the casing B. The shaft K carries the cam N of the brake for the wheel at the other end of the axle. As shown the brakes each comprise a pair of shoes 0, C riveted respectively at P and D on the anchor plates and engaging the interior of drums W. External brakes or band brakes may however be used. The cam E for the shoes C is operated by a Bowden cable G attached at U to the anchor plate A, the sheath being connected to the cam lever F. The brakes may be operated by the handle grip R of the steering and propelling lever T, the grip being rotatably mounted for this purpose and having the cable G attached thereto. The shaft K may be operated by a toothed rack on the anchor plate engaging a pinion on the shaft instead of by the link H. The brake 0 may be applied independently of the brake C by a hand lever on the shaft K or by an arm M adapted for engagement by a hand lever Q pivoted on the axle casing or the arm M may be connected by a Bowden cable or rod to a hand lever. A brake on the front wheel may also be connected for operation by the shaft K. or this brake may be arranged to act as a servobrake to apply the brake 0 simultaneously with or alternatively to the brake C. In this case the pivoted anchor plate of the front wheel brake is connected as by a cable to a lever on the shaft K and the brake itself may be applied simultaneously with the brake C by an additional connection to the hand grip R or through a compensating mechanism or by a separate lever, which may be arranged on the other propelling handle.
