Abstract

733,344. Treadle mechanism for cycles. WILLIAMS, J. Jan. 19, 1953 [Jan. 22, 1952] No. 1789/52. Class 136(2). A treadle operated power transmission device for a bicycle comprises a supporting frame 10, a chain wheel 19 rotatably mounted thereon forward of the rear wheel, a pair of levers 13 each pivoted intermediate its length at 12 on said frame and each having one end extending forwardly and arranged to be operated as a treadle, and a pair of connecting rods 16 each pivoted at 15 to one of the levers 13 and at 17 to a member 18 operatively connected with the chainwheel shaft. Owing to the mass of the lever 13 and connecting rods 16 the pedals 14 may not rise from the lowest positions so easily as the normal pedals. A slipping clutch is provided to overcome the inertia of the treadles. For this purpose the rear hub 21, Fig. 2, is provided with a friction ring 22 suitably mounted on bolts 23 and urged against the rear chain sprocket 20 by springs 24. Declutching means operable by a cable may be provided. As shown in Fig. 1, the supporting frame 10 is constituted by the bicycle frame but the frame 10 may be detachably secured to an ordinary bicycle. The supporting frame 10 may also be incorporated in a tandem bicycle as shown in Fig. 3, two levers 27, 28 being pivoted about two lateral journals 26 projecting from a mounting 25. Parts 27a, 28a respectively of the levers are connected by rods 31, 32 to a pivot 36 on a chain wheel 33 mounted on a journal 34. The same construction of levers and connecting rods is provided on the other side of the machine but in opposite phase relation. As shown in Fig. 4, a standard tandem frame 10 is provided with journals 40 for levers 41, 42 which are connected by rods 45, 46 to a chain wheel 47.
