Abstract
420,128. Variable-speed chain gearing. EGG, O., 43, Avenue de la Grande ArmÚe, Paris. April 3, 1934, No. 10028. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In variable-speed chain gearing for cycles of the type comprising several sprockets of different sizes on the rear wheel hub and a chain-shifting member adapted to act on the side of the chain, in combination with spring tensioning-means, such as a jockey sprocket, acting on the inside of the chain, a spring- controlled lever is so mounted on the frame as to be rotatable about an axis lying in a plane parallel to that of the frame, rotational movement of the lever causing its operative end to bear on the side of the chain and move the chain transversely from one sprocket to another. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the chain 1 is shifted laterally by an arm 9 on a rod 10, which is slidably and rotatably mounted on the frame, its upper end being fitted with a handle 12 by which the rod is first pushed down into the operative position against the action of a spring 11, and then turned to shift the chain. A jockey sprocket 14 is mounted on a lever 16, which is pivoted at 17, is acted upon by a spring 19, and is provided with a pedal 20, whereby the tension of the chain may be released. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the lower run of the chain is engaged by a forked lever 28 rotatably mounted on a vertical stud 29 on a bracket 30 secured to the chain stay 31, the lever 28 being operated against the action of a spring 32 by a Bowden cable 35 acting on an arm 33, the sheath of the cable bearing against an arm 34 on the bracket. In either form, the chain is prevented from wedging between the wheel spokes and the adjacent sprocket by a conical guard plate fitted on the wheel.
