Abstract
496,086. Pedal bicycles. KELLEY, J. M. R. Feb. 10, 1938, No. 4123. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1937. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (iii)] In a bicycle of the type in which a low seat with a back-rest, and the pedal shaft are arranged substantially in the same horizontal plane between the front and rear wheels, the front part of the frame supports an upper extension of the steering fork to which is fitted a cross-bar of the steering gear, provides bearings for driving sprocket-wheels of a pedal and chain gear, and supports a transverse handle-bar which is coupled to the cross-bar by telescopically-adjustable links. The front part of the frame is of somewhat usual form and is connected to two parallel longitudinal tubes N, the rear parts of which constitute the lower rear fork. The seat T is mounted on a longitudinal tube N<3>, which is connected at its rear end to a member U braced by back-stays U<1>, a back-rest V hinged to the seat T being adjustably supported from the member U by plates W. The pedal crank-shaft L is mounted in a support above the usual crank-bracket position, and drives the rear wheel through a chain R, sprockets K, J, and a chain Q. The stem of the front fork has an upward extension B2 having a cross-bar B<3> connected by two telescopically-adjustable links E to the handlebar D, which is mounted in an extension C<1> of the top tube C. A rear hub brake is actuated by a lever S and cable S<1>.
