602,965. Hand-propelled vehicles. HILL, C. S. Nov. 13, 1945, No. 30369. [Class 136 (ii)] In hand-propelled vehicles of the kind in which two independently movable hand levers are provided for propulsion purposes, each of which is connected by a spring-tensioned driving chain to a sprocket wheel which drives a back wheel of the vehicle through a free-wheel clutch, the vehicle is provided with a back axle 18 which is rotatable and has a driving connection with a rear wheel 26, each of the hand levers 34 being connected by its associated driving chain 37 to a sprocket wheel 38 mounted on the axle and transmitting the drive through a free wheel clutch. The vehicle is formed of two tubes 10 and 11 connected by castings 12, 13, 14 and a transverse tube 16 which passes through casting 14 and at each end of tube 16 is clamped a dependent casting 17 drilled to receive a rotatable rear axle 18. Tube 11 carries a rotatable sleeve 21 which is integral with the fixed part of a steering pivot mounting 22, the movable part carrying a fixed front axle 23 having wheels 24. Two larger wheels 25, 26 are mounted on the axle 18, wheel 26 being rotationally coupled by a dog clutch comprising dogs 27 on the wheel hub meshing with dogs on a sleeve splined to the axle and urged inwardly by spring 33. The dogs can be retained in a disengaged position. The vehicle is propelled by a pair of levers 34 mounted on each end of shaft 35. Each lever carries a sprocket sector 36 and a pair of roller chains 37 which pass round sprockets 38, and have a tension spring 41. A seat 43 is slidably mounted on the frame tubes the seat being provided with grooved rollers 45. A brake having a drum 52 secured to the axle has shoes mounted on plate 53 connected by a torque arm to cross tube 16. A cam is actuated by lever 55, rod 56 and an arm integral with plate 58 mounted on shaft 35. A pawl 61 connected to plunger is adapted to engage ratchet when plunger is depressed by means of button 63 so that lever applies brake. Foot rests 65 are provided on boot axle 00 and have toe clips 60. The vehicle is steered by suitable foot movements.
