Abstract

1,007,221. Powered wheelbarrows; motor vehicle driving gears. ROAD MACHINES (DRAYTON) Ltd. Jan. 3, 1962 [Jan. 6, 1961], No. 686/61. Headings B7D and B7H. An engine powered wheelbarrow comprises a chassis including beams 1, 2, a wheeled axle 10 supported below the chassis by block 12 from beam 1 and by gear-box 13 mounted on beam 2 and located substantially between the beams, and a skip 14 pivotally mounted about an axis at the front of the chassis. The skip 14 pivots on pins 17 mounted on brackets 16 attached to chassis cross member 3 and is supported at the rear by cross member 4 on which is mounted a releasable latch. Rearward tubular extensions 5, 6 of beams 1, 2 are joined by a handle 7 and tie members 18 join the front and rear ends of each beam. Variable pitch pulley 26 on engine output shaft 27 drives pulley 29 mounted on gear-box input shaft 30 through belt 28 which is tensioned by a jockey pulley 31 or alternatively by pulley 29 being a compensating pulley. Gear-box input shaft 30 drives meshing gears 38, 39 and 41, 42 the latter having teeth 44 which engage teeth 45 of dog clutch 46 mounted on splines on sleeve 51 pinned to axle 10. Engagement of the clutch, which is biased by spring 53, is controlled by a lever 56 mounted on or extending up to handle 7 through a link 57 and pivoting fork 54 engaging flange 47 on sleeve 46. The wheels are driven through a pawl-and-ratchet gear 60, 61 within each wheel hub. The gearbox may be modified to include a reverse gear, brake and differential gear when the pawl-andratchet gear is omitted from the wheel hubs. The front shovel-like portion 15 may be pivoted to skip 14.
