Abstract
470,304. Mining &c. machines. MAVOR & COULSON, Ltd., and DAVIES, A. W. Aug. 7, 1936, No. 21760. [Class 68 (i)] A machine for cutting minerals in mines &c. comprises a large diameter, thin grinding disc rotating at high speed and adapted to travel along a bed &c. placed along the face to be cut and adapted to be advanced periodically. A single motor may drive all the parts of the machine. In Figs. 1 and 2, a bed A, adjustably supported by jacks 4 at each corner and carrying a motor-driven winding drum 3, supports a longitudinally movable base 5 carrying a transversely movable slide 6 supporting a pillar 7 on which a collar fitting 8 is vertically movable; a bifurcated arm 9 is rotatable in the collar fitting 8 and supports the grinding disc C which is driven, through gearing 12, 14, by a motor 10 on the collar fitting 8. The disc C may comprise a steel plate with a composition of iron and diamond dust on its periphery. The base 5 is moved along the bed by a rope wound on drum 3, and the bed is moved similarly. The bed may be mounted on skids, rollers or endless tracks. The slide 6 is moved transversely by passing a rope from drum 3 to a sheave 16 to drive screw 17. The collar fitting 8 is raised or lowered by passing the rope round sheave 19 to drive a screw 18 through gearing 20. The arm 9 is rotated by passing the rope round a sheave 21 to act through gearing 22. In Fig. 4, the pillar 7 is omitted and the disc C, driven by motor 26, is adjustably mounted on a shaft 25 carried by a bracket 23 rotatable in bearings 24 on the slide 6. Locking means for the parts may be provided. The longitudinal movement may be effected by a variably driven screw or a hydraulic or pneumatic ram and the transverse movement by swinging the disc in its own plane.
