Abstract

1,079,063. Grinding. TYSAMAN MACHINE CO. Inc. Aug. 10, 1964, No. 32402/64. Heading B3D. A cut-off machine comprises means for rotating a workpiece W, Fig. 2, and a rotatable saw wheel 2 mounted for movement at right angles to the axis of rotation of the workpiece. The saw wheel is of abrasive and is mounted on a shaft which is rotated in a bearing 16 by a belt drive from a motor 28, the bearing and motor being carried by a plate: 18 movable about a pivot by an hydraulic piston and cylinder device. The wheel is disposed within a guard 34 having a cut-out 44 for permitting the wheel to engage the workpiece. Coolant is supplied to the wheel within the guard by nozzles (48, Fig. 5) which are mounted on the guard and connected by flexible conduits (50) to a coolant supply; the coolant flows to a reservoir in the base 10 of the machine. A pair of tracks 8 extend longitudinally of the machine and support a work-holder comprising first and second units 4, 6. The unit 4 consists of an annular standard 54 formed with two flanges (58, Fig. 6), each of which has bearing means (60) for rings (62, 64) joined by bolts (68) to an annulus (66). The workpiece extends through the unit and the ring (64) carries a chuck having at least four jaw devices (72) for gripping the workpiece. The other ring 62 carries a sprocket 74 connected by a chain 76 to a sprocket 78 driven by a motor 80 whereby the workpiece is rotated. The other unit 6 is substantially identical to the unit 4 but without the sprocket, the unit being rotated by the workpiece. The base 84 of the unit 6 has a depend ing cradle (92, Fig. 7) carrying a nut (88) which engages a lead screw (86) which is mounted in the. base. of the machine and can be rotated to adjust the unit 6. A second lead screw and nut may be providet for adjusting the unit 4. A cover (104) presents coolant and cuttings reaching the lead screw and nut. A worksupport 12 is disposed adjacent the unit 4 for supporting the workpiece when the jaw devices 72 are released and to facilitate moving the workpiece axially relative to the. unit. The support 12 consists of a double tapered roller (106, Fig. 11) mounted on a shaft (108) rotatably supported; in housings (110) carried by screw jacks (114, 116), each of which is driven by a chain drive (126) from a common handle (118) for vertical adjustment of the roller (106). The screw jacks are mounted on a platform (130) having end walls (132) formed with guide blocks (136) engaging vertical grooves in upright walls (140) on a base portion (142) of the support (12), the base portion resting on the tracks 8. The platform (130) carries an hydraulic motor (146) having a rod (148) connected to the base portion (142), operation of the motor raising or lowering the platform (130), and hence the roller (106), through a short distance relative to the base portion to enable the roller to support the workpiece where the jaw devices 72 of the unit 4 are released. In another embodiment in, which pieces are to be cut from both ends of a workpiece (W<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 12), by a cut-off wheel (162), the machine has a single workholding unit (196) having an annular standard (184) rotatably supporting a pair of rings, each of which has a chuck (198) for gripping the workpiece. One of the rings has a sprocket connected by a chain drive (200) to a motor (202) carried by the standard whereby the workpiece is rotated during the cutting operation. The standard has a depending shaft (188) which is rotatably supported in a base (182) of the unit and has a wheel (194) engaged by a worm driven by a motor mounted on the base so that, after one end of the workpiece has been cut, the unit can be rotated through 180 degrees to present the other end of the workpiece to the wheel (162).
