Abstract

469,160. Cooling and silencing exhaust. SOC. ANON. DES APPAREILS G. A. L. Sept. 14, 1936, Nos. 25062 and 25063. Convention dates, Dec. 24, 1935 and April 29, 1936. [Class 7 (ii)] In a device for silencing and extinguishing the flame of exhaust gases in which the gases are expanded in a chamber 3 and cooled in hollow fins 5 by external air, a perforated plate 12, the orifices of which may be dished, causes uniform dispersion of the gas. The fins are each made from a pair of undulating sheets of metal, e.g. copper, welded or riveted together and their ends are bent over as shown at 35 to obscure the flame in the chamber 3. They extend in planes perpendicular to the plane of the paper and are gradually reduced in length to produce an ejector effect on the gas by the air flowing past the device. Additional cooling-fins 36 cool the chamber 3. A separate device may be provided for each cylinder. Alternatively, separate pipes cooled by fins may be led to a common chamber 3 and the hollow fins may lead to a common exhaust manifold also cooled by fins. A passage 37 for collecting heated air for external use may be placed at the rear of the chamber 3, the heated air being conveyed away by a pipe 38.
