Abstract
<PICT:0468633/IV/1> <PICT:0468633/IV/2> A linen-like finish is imparted to cellulosic materials by forming a cellulose swelling or dissolving solution or substance on the material, preferably by reaction of a metal salt and an alkali, e.g. cuprammonia. Sodium or potassium hydroxide may be added as an accelerator. In an example, dry scoured cotton cloth is padded with copper sulphate solution, passed through a cooled ammonia solution containing caustic soda; after about 10 seconds the cloth is passed through dilute sulphuric acid, washed and dried. During treatment in the ammonia bath, the cloth is preferably laterally stretched. Suitable lateral stretching means comprise endless chains 2 driven by sprockets 1 and provided with pin plates for engaging the selvedges of the cloth. The cloth is pressed on to the pins by rubber rollers 4 and passes into the bath C. The endless chain is here guided by rails whose distance apart is adjustable by hand wheel 3b whereby stretch is imparted to the material, which is removed from the pins by a mangle 5.
