Abstract
Cotton fabric is subjected to the limited action of a cuprammonium solution so that the latter does not exert any material solvent action. The solution may be forced into the fabric, e.g. with rollers, and the fabric treated with acid to precipitate the cellulose, washed and dried. The fabric may be sprayed with the cuprammonium solution, or it may be passed through a bath thereof and excess removed so that the fabric takes up enough solution to dissolve the required amount of cellulose. The solution, which preferably contains 1-5 per cent copper and 5-15 per cent ammonia is allowed to contact with the fabric for 10-60 secs.; after acting on the fabric, the solution is forced into the fabric by squeezing rollers, the solution so removed being run to waste. In an example, a bleached mercerized cloth which has been rendered absorbent, is passed through a cuprammonium solution containing 2,5 per cent copper and 9 per cent ammonia; after 30 secs. it is squeezed and passed through dilute sulphuric acid, washed and dried; the fabric is stiff, linen-like and hairless.
