Abstract
<PICT:0378342/IV/1> <PICT:0378342/IV/2> <PICT:0378342/IV/3> Thin films or skins obtained from solutions of viscose or of cellulose in Schweizer's reagent are subject to stretching both longitudinally and transversely during precipitation or after precipitation but while still in a plastic condition. As shown in the drawings, a solution of cellulose in cuprammonium issues from a pouring device in a wide layer and without further support enters a precipitating bath 4 consisting of a caustic alkali solution. The film 2 passes around rods or rollers 5, 6, and is drawn forward by a roller 7 by which it is stretched longitudinally. It is freed from precipitating liquid by means of pressure rollers 8 and by washing and is treated with other liquids for removal of copper. These treatments are combined with the width stretching. Tensioning frames hold the film by means of claw members 10 connected with endless chains 15 through arms 16 and flat members 17. The claw members are led away from each other by movement in rails 11. The film may be stretched till it is much wider than the length of the pouring slot. The film is sprayed with liquid from nozzles 12 and passes into a bath 13 of dilute sulphuric acid or water. The claw members are released from the film which is then passed through other treatment baths and dried.
