Abstract
<PICT:0469905/IV/1> Endless threads of woolly character are obtained by extruding viscose into a coagulating bath, passing the cellulose xanthate threads to a take-up device, and then conducting them in a continuous manner and free from tension through a bath or baths which is heated above 70 DEG C., and which, effects decomposition of the cellulose xanthate, the threads remaining in the bath or baths so long that decomposition to cellulose hydrate is completed by the high temperature. The hot bath may comprise an organic liquid or a salt solution. Preferably, the xanthate filaments are drawn from the precipitating bath by squeezing rollers, or a godet and are then passed into the decomposing bath free from tension. The foaming effect of the decomposing bath disturbs the parallel formation of the filaments and produces strong crimping. The viscose used may have a high alkali content and may contain pigments, matting agents, and other additions. In an example, ripened viscose is spun into a solution of sodium and ammonium sulphates. The bundle of filaments produced is drawn from the bath by a roller and allowed to fall into a channel containing glycerine at 130 DEG C. The hot glycerine carries the filaments to the end of the channel and on to an endless sieve band. The filaments are then sprayed with water and other liquids. Instead of glycerine a poly-glycol may be used for the conversion bath. Several parallel loose bands of filaments may be treated on the endless band. As shown, filaments b of cellulose xanthate issue from nozzle a and are drawn through squeeze rolls c from which they drop into trough d. Heated liquid passes through the trough and carries the filaments on to a sieve band f. The liquid is collected in trough h and returned through a pump, storage vessel, and heater, to the trough d. Treatment liquids are applied to the regenerated cellulose filaments by the sprays e.
