[Class 135] In a safety cut-off device for gas apparatus of the kind in which a valve 13 controlled by a piston or diaphragm 14 in a pressure chamber 19 closes when the gas supply fails or its pressure falls below a predetermined valve, an orifice 21 by which gas passes from the inlet chamber 18 through the pressure chamber 19 and a byepass pipe 22 to the valve outlet 11 is automatically enlarged by the withdrawal of a throttling portion 20 on the valve stem when the valve opens. A choke 23 is also formed in the byepass pipe 22 and has a crosssection which is the geometric mean of the crosssections of the orifice 21 when throttled as shown, and when occupied only by the conical portion 20<a> of the stem. Due to the throttling part 20, the amount of gas escaping at any unclosed cocks in the system when the valve 13 is closed is reduced to a minimum. Further as the choke 23 is smaller than the orifice 21 when the valve is open, the pressure at which it closes is independent of the amount of gas passing the valve. Bv suitable choice of the choke 23 and the orifice 21, the pressure or suction on the diaphragm 14 may be made to counterbalance that on the valve 13 when the latter is closed. A byepass 25 controlled by a screw 26 facilitates quick opening of the valve when the supply is restored.
