Abstract

466,992. Power hammers. CORDES, H. July 2, 1936, Nos. 18378 and 18379. Convention dates, July 2, 1935 and Feb. 26, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] Relates to power hammers operating on the Diesel cycle and having a cylinder the lower part of which forms a combustion chamber and having a loose stepped piston or ram, and consists in a construction in which the injection space for the fuel surrounds the impact transmitting surface of the ram. As shown, the stepped ram 12 may be held in its upper portion by hooks 24 or allowed to fall to commence operations. The hooks are opened or closed by spring action. As the ram 12 falls, air is drawn into the cylinder above the ram and air which has previously been forced through the passage 19 and underneath the ram is compressed in the space 6 as soon as a projection 12b serving as a piston to the space 6 closes its connection with the main part of the cylinder. When the ram strikes the impact block 2, the compressed air is forced outwards into a space 25, where fuel is injected from a nozzle 8. A pin 10 is pushed down by the ram and carries a roller bearing on a pivoted lever 9 operating a fuel pump 7. The combustion space may be increased in height to improve the fuel atomization by providing a pocket in the cylinder walls.
