Abstract

1340708 Power hammers BRITISH STEEL PILING CO Ltd 29 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 21277/70 Heading B3H A diesel hammer for pile driving or rock breaking comprises a piston 10, 12 reciprocable in a casing 2, 4 and defining a combustion chamber 18 with an anvil block 6 and an enclosed chamber 38, Fig. 2, with the casing which can be sealed during a return stroke of the piston to produce a suction force on the piston in the opposite direction to the return movement. The diesel fuel is injected by a cam 26 operated pump 20 in a direction 22 during the working stroke. The enclosed space 38 is connected to the upper part of the casing 4, which is connected to atmosphere, by a duct 40 when the piston is in its lowest position. Alternatively the chamber 38 may have a relief valve (42), Fig. 3 (not shown). To initially start the hammer the piston is raised by a rod 46 with an enlargement 48 which engages a sleeve 52. Alternatively the piston is raised by the engagement of an expandible linkage (64), Fig. 3 (not shown), and the sleeve 52. The hammer is lubricated by a cam operated pump in the fuel pump casing.
