Abstract

A flux for electric welding, and particularly for coating bare electrode wires or rods for fine-gauge welding, is composed of a mixture having the composition by weight: iron oxide, 60-70 per cent; orthoclase felspar, 15-25 per cent; talc, 5-15 per cent; sodium carbonate, up to 7 per cent, based on the anhydrous form. Ferrous or ferric oxide, or a mixture of the two, may be employed. The mixture is formed into a paste by the addition of a fluid adhesive, and the rods are coated by a process of extrusion or by dipping. A suitable composition by weight for the electrode consists of: carbon, 0,06-0,13 per cent; manganese, 0,3-0,6 per cent; silicon, up to 0,04 per cent; sulphur, up to 0,04 per cent; phosphorus, up to 0,04 per cent; iron, the remainder.
