Abstract

A flux for electric welding, suitable for coating welding electrodes, comprises siliceous clay and manganese dioxide to the extent of at least 85 per cent by weight, the proportion of siliceous clay to manganese dioxide lying within the range of from 1 : 3 to 3 : 2. Plastic clay may be added to render the flux more easily worked, in which case the proportion of siliceous clay may be reduced to the minimum given above. The manganese dioxide may be in the form of pyrolusite ore, and the siliceous clay may contain from 80 to 85 per cent of silica together with aluminium oxide and iron. Sodium silicate, gum arabic, and the organic silicon compound known as silicon ester may be employed as binding material. The welding electrode may be provided with a braided or spun cellulosic covering to which the flux is applied by extrusion. The composition of a suitable steel electrode is given.
