Abstract

A flux for use with welding electrodes, e.g. as a coating applied directly to the bare electrodes, contains iron oxide, silica, and starch, the starch constituting 4-20 per cent by weight of the flux. For example a flux comprising 35-45 per cent of iron oxide, 20-30 per cent of silica, 10-20 per cent of ferromanganese, 5 per cent of clay, and 15 per cent of starch may be made into a paste with sodium silicate or gum arabic and applied to an electrode by extrusion. The coating is hard, fuses readily, and during welding the starch gives rise to a blanketing atmosphere which localises and intensifies the heating effect. The presence of starch in the proportions specified also has a marked effect on the arc voltage.
