Abstract

A flux for an arc welding electrode has an anhydrous composition as expressed in percentages of essential chemical radicals consisting of substantially 30-50 per cent of SiO2, 15-30 per cent of Fe2O3 and TiO2, 5-20 per cent of a metallic deoxidizer such as FeMn, 5-15 per cent of MgO, and 2 to 10 per cent of Al2O3. A suitable flux expressed in the same terms may consist of 40 per cent of SiO2, 6 per cent Al2O3, 11 per cent Fe2O3 and FeO, 13 per cent TiO2, 12 per cent FeMn, 4 per cent Na2O, 4 per cent K2O and 8 per cent MgO. The flux in paste form may consist of 24 per cent of a felspar, such as a potassium felspar, 18 per cent of ilmenite, 14 per cent of asbestos, 9 per cent of low carbon ferromanganese, 28 per cent liquid sodium silicate and 7 per cent water. The anhydrous composition of such flux is 32 per cent felspar, 24 per cent ilmenite, 19 per cent asbestos, 11 per cent ferromanganese and 14 per cent sodium silicate. The ferromanganese may be replaced by other metallic de-oxidizers. The asbestos may consist of 40,3 per cent SiO2, 1 per cent Al2O3, 1,83 per cent Fe2O3, 1,14 per cent FeO, 42,32 per cent MgO and 13,15 per cent H2O and the ilmenite 50,68 per cent TiO2, 41,7 per cent Fe2O3 and FeO, 1,46 per cent SiO2, 0,064 per cent CaO and 0,052 per cent MgO. From 8-15 per cent of fibrous material such as wood flour, a cotton tape or woven sleeve may be included. Specifications 395,228, 408,183, 434,524, [all in Group XXII], and 447,976 are referred to.
