Abstract

An electrode for arc welding is provided with a coating which comprises (a) titanium dioxide either pure or in the form of rutile, a titanite, a titanate, and/or ferro-titanium; (b) silicon dioxide in the form of silica or silica together with sodium or potassium silicate; and (c) magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, or aluminium oxide, or mixtures of these substances. These constituents are so proportioned that at welding temperatures the coating will contain titanium dioxide, silica, and magnesium p oxide and/or alumina in the relative proportions of 15-73 per cent of titanium dioxide, 19-58 per cent of silica, and 3-29 per cent of magnesium oxide and/or alumina. In a modification, a whole or part of the silica and alumina in the coating may be replaced by pyrophyllite (hydrated aluminium silicate). The coating may also include deoxidizing agents, e.g. ferro-manganese or aluminium, combustible materials, e.g. cellulose or pitch, which provide a non-oxidizing atmosphere during welding, and alloying metals, e.g. vanadium, molybdenum, or manganese, or their compounds, e.g. manganese dioxide. Examples are given of coatings comprising rutile, silica, and calcined magnesite, magnesium carbonate, or alumina with sodium or potassium silicate solution as a binder, with or without ferro-manganese; pure titanium dioxide, silica, calcined magnesite, ferro-manganese, and alphacellulose, with sodium silicate as binder; and titanium dioxide, pyrophyllite, ferro-manganese, alphacellulose, and manganese dioxide, with sodium silicate as binder. The coatings may be used on rods of mild steel or of stainless steel British Specification 409,293, [Group XXII], and U.S.A. Specification 1,931,466 are referred to.
