[Class 78 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In lifting and lowering gear for ships' lifeboats in which the falls are passed round a pair of interconnected drums, in hoisting, one of the falls is passed for a few turns round the part 5a of the drum which is formed as a warping-head and is then led back to the warping-head of the winch 7 which thus operates both drums. A form of winch which may be employed in connection with this arrangement comprises a pair of drums 5, 6, Fig. 2<a>, which may be geared together when required by the axially-slidable pinion 13. A brake-supporting member 16 integral with the pinion 13 carries the centrifugal-brake elements which co-operate with the fixed drum 17. The brake drum is further mounted with the brake-lining against which the member 16 may be pressed by the hand-wheel 20. In another form an internal gear 28, Fig. 3a, on the winch drum 24 gears with the pinions 29 on the bracket 31 fast on the fixed shaft' 25. The pinions 33, 34 solid with the pinions 29, 30 gear with the rotating shaft 35. The disc 36 on the shaft 35 may be pressed by the hand wheel 42 against the friction-surface on the fixed member 31 and simultaneously friction surfaces are brought against the members 37, 39 to bring the centrifugal brake 38 into play.
