Abstract

463,918. Lighting systems for flying- grounds and the like. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21449. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1935. [Class 75 (iv)] A lighting system for a flying-ground or the like comprises an underground space containing a light-source and fitted with a multi-part cover, the parts of the cover being normally individually kept in an upper position by resilient means but being temporarily moved downwards individually by an aircraft wheel or other external force in such a manner that the luminous emission is partly or wholly interrupted according as to whether one or more parts of the cover occupy the lowered position. The light source may consist of incandescent filament bulbs of point or linear form, or super high-pressure mercury vapour discharge tubes, and they may be mounted in one or more reflectors. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the cover for the space 1 is in the form of four spring-hinged parts 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, the part 4c being lowered by a force P. The lamps 7 may be switched off automatically when the corresponding parts of the cover are lowered, and the lamps may be carried by the parts of the cover. Fig. 4a shows a cover part 13 fitted with a reflector 14 for re-directing a vertical beam M into a substantially horizontal direction N. Fig. 5 shows opposite cover parts 15, 16 pivoted on shafts 17, 18 against the action of return springs 19, 20, the shafts 17, 18 carrying bars 21, 22 interconnected by cables 23, 24. This avoids danger to an aeroplane approaching in the direction X. Fig. 6a shows opposite cover parts 26, 27 coupled by a shaft 25, the part 27 being provided with armoured windows 29. The parts 26, 27 are movable in horizontal guides 32, 33 against the action of springs 34, 35. Fig. 8a shows a cover part 36 of part cylindrical or ellipsoidal formation which can be pressed bodily downwards against the action of springs 38 in vertical guide holes 39. The re-directing reflectors and the return springs may be replaced, respectively, by prisms and hydraulic means.
