Abstract

391,718. Street &c. lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. and DAMANT, E. L. B., Magnet House, Kingsway, London. Dec. 1, 1932, No. 34022. [Class 75 (iv).] In a system of directional lighting in which the beams from a number of lamps are directed through divergent angles extending laterally in a horizontal plane, particularly applicable to street lighting, each lamp is provided at one side with a screen which serves to shield an observer approaching the beam from that side along a path which is transverse to the beam, the screen being extended in front of the light source to meet a vertical plane through the light source substantially normal to the transverse path. In the form shown, each lamp 5 has translucent glass sides 11, 12 and a clear glass front 6 having a narrow margin 7 of opal or other translucent glass. Alternatively, the margin may be opaque and may extend about half-way across the front. An electric lamp bulb 8 is arranged near the side 12, a troughshaped reflector 9 having its focal line parallel to the kerb being disposed behind the bulb and another reflector above it so as to produce a divergent lateral beam 13. The upper part of the reflector 9 may be made rough to produce diffused local lighting.
