Abstract

1319379 Vehicle headlamps GTE SYLVANTA Inc 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 24869/71 Heading F4R A vehicle headlamp comprises a housing including two adjacent lampbulbs each associated with an apertured opaque mask 7a, 7b, through whose apertures light is projected forwardly, the aperture in one mask 7a being elongated horizontally and being more transmissive to one side than to the other side of a central vertical plane VP through its associated lampbulb, the aperture in the other mask 7b being substantially uniformly transmissive about a central vertical plane VP through its associated lampbulb. Each lampbulb is associated with an ellipsoidal reflector, being at the nearer focus of this reflector, whilst the associated mask is near the farther focus. The apertures in the masks comprise both transparent 13 and translucent 12 portions. The elongated aperture 8a of the one mask has a transparent window 13a on one side of said central vertical plane VP to allow greater light transmission through this side, the remainder of the aperture being filled with frosted glass 12a, the shape of the aperture producing the required light pattern. The aperture 8b in the other mask is part circular, being filled mostly with a transparent window 13b but having a near rectangular frosted portion 12b across its upper part, this frosted part lying wholly above the horizontal plane HP through the lampbulb. Switches are included to connect power to one or both lampbulbs. High power and low power beams may be provided by switching voltage dropping resistors in or out of series with the lamp or using bulbs with both high and low power filaments.
