Abstract

741,055. Vehicle headlights; electric lamp bulbs. DEVAUX, R. H. P., and FALASCHI, O. Oct. 10, 1952 [May 29, 1952], No. 25428/52. Classes 39(2), 75(2) and 75(4). In an anti-dazzle arrangement, for vehicle headlights, comprising a reflector and a lamp bulb 101, the envelope of the lamp bulb is provided with an axial screen 107, in front of the lamp filament, which is convex on the surface facing the filament and reflects light back towards the reflector, and with a lateral screen 105 or 106, between the filament and the reflector, which reflects back into the envelope dazzling light which would otherwise be reflected towards the side of the road occupied by oncoming traffic. As shown each side of the lamp bulb is screened by thickened, less transparent portions 103, 104, which may be coloured and are partially covered by opaque, backreflecting coatings 105, 106 respectively, the latter being, if desired, coloured differently from each other. The axial screen is provided by a concavity 107 in the outer surface of the bulb, covered by an opaque, back-reflecting coating 108 which extends laterally towards the thickened parts 103, 104. In a twin headlight, system the respective bulbs 101 may be of different colours to provide contrasting ilhunination and, in the event of failure of one headlight a means of identifying to oncoming traffic the sides of the vehicle. The axial and lateral screens may be detachably mounted on the lamp bulb.
