Abstract

A headlamp unit comprises a first halogen lamp 4 adapted to provide a dipped beam and mounted in a concave reflector 1 with its filament 9 extending substantially in the direction of the axis of the reflector and located immediately in front of the focus F H , and a second halogen lamp 3 adapted to provide a main beam and associated with an additional reflector 14. The reflector 14 may be a semi-paraboloid mounted in the lower half of the reflector 1, as shown, or a substantially full paraboloid mounted either in the lower half of the reflector 1 or outside this reflector. The lamp 3 is disposed so that its filament 8 passes through the focus F z of the reflector 14 and extends along or perpendicular to the reflector axis. A shield 15 of asymmetrical cut-off form surrounds the lamp 4. The filaments may be either parallel or perpendicular to the axes of the cylindrical quartz lamp bulbs.
