Abstract

1347126 Vehicle headlamp WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 18 Aug 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 38723/71 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] A vehicle headlamp comprises a unitary concave reflector having an inner surface defined by two hemiparabolic reflector segments which are displaced from one another in a longitudinal direction and merge in a step along the medial plane of the reflector and has a light source located between the foci of the segments such that light rays from the segments give two superimposed beams of equal intensity. In an embodiment (Fig. 2) a moulded glass reflector 15 having a coating of aluminium has a filament 20 located between the foci F 17 and F 16 of the hemiparaboloids 16, 17. The angle of convergence α of the beam from segment 16 is the same as the angle of divergence # of the beam from segment 17 and thus two superimposed beams are produced (Fig. 1, not shown). The stepped reflector may be used in association with a tungsten filament (Fig. 2) or a quartz halogen light source (Figs. 11, 12 and 15, not shown) and may form part of a sealed-beam lamp (Figs. 4, 5a, and 12, not shown) or be formed from a pressed-metal sheet and have a translucent cover (Fig. 15, not shown). The filament may lay across (Figs. 4 and 5a, not shown) or along (Figs. 12 and 15, not shown) the optical axis of the reflector. The centre of the filament may be off-set to one side of the optical axis (Fig. 5b and 6, not shown) and may be raised above the horizontal medial plane of the reflector (Fig. 5c, not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the focal lengths of the segments 16a, 17a are unequal, the optical axis of segment 16a coincides with the geometrical axis X-X of the reflector but the optical axis O-O of segment 17a is set at an angle to the axis X-X. In some embodiments a fully or partially vertically fluted translucent member is used to close-off the lamp. The flutings may be evenly distributed across the member (Fig. 10, not shown) or of differing width and radii (Figs. 14 and 14b, not shown) for use in fog lamps. Where a partially fluted member is used, Fig. 13, the periphery 51 may be amber. Lighting systems utilizing the above lamps comprise four headlamps on the front of a vehicle grouped in two pairs on a horizontal line (Fig. 7, not shown) the outer lamp of each pair (38) comprising a single beam lamp, one of the other lamps (40) comprising a spot lamp and the other (22a) comprising a dual-segment lamp. In another lighting system (Fig. 16, not shown) two sets of three headlamps are used, a headlamp (65) on either side having a dual-segment reflector, the other headlamps having single or dual filaments.
