Abstract

A vehicle headlight comprises a reflector 6, a single filament lamp 11 and a screen adapted to co-operate with the lamp to produce a dipped beam, the screen having a surface 8 located between the filament 17 and the lower half of the reflector and the lamp being movable relative to both the reflector and the screen along the axis of the reflector between a full beam position, in which the filament extends across the focal plane and is clear of the screen, and a dipped beam position in which the filament lies in front of the focal plane and co-operates with the screen so that no light falls on the lower half of the reflector. The screen may be fixed relative to the reflector, as shown, or movable axially in the opposite direction to the lamp. The lamp, which is preferably of the iodine type, may be moved by one or more electromagnets 14 or by means of a Bowden cable, hydraulic jack or pneumatic system.
