[Class 97 (iii)] Relates to meters for measuring the quantity of heat carried by the fluid in a conduit by the amount of evaporation of a liquid from a vessel mounted on the conduit. A member serving to set the meter in or out of operation, e.g. a valve closing the mouth of the vessel, is mechanically coupled to a closing device for the conduit. A plunger resiliently carrying a conical valve for the mouth of the evaporation vessel, which may be mounted in a frame made in one piece with a tap, may be moved from the closure position when the tap is opened and vice versa by a disc adjustably secured on the handle spindle of the tap and engaging a recess in the plunger. Fig. 3 shows a construction in which the valve 15 for the evaporation vessel 8 is moved from the closure position before the conduit 4 is opened. The valve head 35 of the tap 1 is fixed on the spindle 33 having a hand wheel 3 and has a soft packing 36 and a cylindrical plug 37 which closely fits or has threaded engagement in the hole 38 of the valve seat. The plunger 14 carrying the valve 15 by means of a spring has a button 34 engaging a slot 40 in the hand wheel 3, so that when the latter is turned the valve 15 is lifted from the mouth of the vessel 8 before the plug 37 is completely withdrawn from the hole 38. In Fig. 4, a cock cone 22 has a hollow spindle 23 in which the evaporation vessel 25 is mounted on a cork or rubber plug 31. The stopper 26 for the vessel 25 is carried by a flanged plate 27 screwed into the hub of the hand wheel 24. The latter is threaded on the spindle 23 and is free to move up and down between the shoulder 29 and a nut 30 before it turns the spindle 23 and cock 22.
