Abstract

496,954. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. KILBY, A. E., and HAYWARD, TYLER, & CO., Ltd. June 8, 1937, No. 15858. [Class 106 (v)] A predetermined quantity of liquid is isolated by allowing the liquid pressure to act on both sides of a differential piston device and the measured quantity is then delivered by allowing the pressure to act on one side of the piston only. Fig. 1 shows one form of measuring apparatus in which a cock 4 is first turned to allow liquid to flow from a tank 2 to the underside of a piston 5 so that if the piston is moved into engagement with an adjustable stop 8. The cock 4 is then turned to shut off the flow of liquid from the tank 2 and to allow liquid to flow from below the piston 5 into a bottle 9 under the pressure of the liquid in the tank 2 on a smaller piston 3 connected to the piston 5. The space between the pistons 3, 5 communicates through a hole 7 with the atmosphere. Figs. 2 and 5 show another form in which the liquid from a pipe 20 can flow through a cock 21 and passage 22 to the space 6 between two differently sized hollow pistons 18, 19 and, when a cock 24 is in the position shown, through a passage 25 to the space below the piston 19. The consequent upward movement of the pistons is limited by stop 34 carried by an adjustable screw cap 33. When a bottle 9 is pressed against a conical head 30, the head 30 is moved upwardly against spring pressure and, through a link 29, turns the cock 24 to close the passage 25 and to allow liquid to flow from below the piston 19 through a passage 27 and filler tube 26 to the bottle. The plug of the cock 24 is normally retained in position by a spring 28 which may be swung aside to allow the plug to be removed for clearing. The piston 19 slides in a glass sleeve 11 which is visible through an aperture 10<1> in the body 10 of the measuring device.
