Abstract
461,485. Circular knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. June 23, 1936, No. 17479. Convention date, July 15, 1935. [Class 74 (ii)] For producing patterns in tuckwork on circular machines with sliding bearded needles, the pressers 9 each have a number of frangible saw-tooth butts 25, which can be removed with the exception of those required for the pattern. A battery of sliding cams 30, one for each butt level, may be set by hand at each feed, if there is more than one, so as to engage the butts 25, or not, as the case may be. The butts so engaged pass up the slopes 30 and the upper ends of the corresponding pressers 9 are thus brought within range of spring-pressed cams 16 by which the beards of corresponding needles are closed. The pressers not operated in this way remain at a low level and the needles corresponding to them do not cast off their loops at that feed. Selected pressers are returned to normal position by the action of a downthrow cam 27 on upper butts 26. The pressers shown rock and slide, but they may slide without rocking.
