Abstract

430,498. Knitting. BOOTON, J. H., and BOOTON, H., Ross Works, Wanlip Street, Leicester. Dec. 20, 1933, No. 35864. [Class 74 (ii)] Yarns in excess of two are fed to the needles of a knitting-machine in plating relationship and are all drawn simultaneously into loops and knitted. The plating is modified at certain or selected needles by the use of yarn engaging means other than the needles themselves to hold out. one or more yarns from the remainder. This may be done by a series of instruments 12 working in tricks behind their associated needles 10 as described in Specification 406,657. Each instrument is attached to a jack 13 provided originally with a large number of removable butts 14 and acted on by a battery of selecting cams 21. There is also a lowermost butt 15 acted on by a preparing cam 20 to raise the jack within range of the selecting cams 21. If the jack is further raised by one of the cams 21, the point of the corresponding instrument 12 acts on the yarns in the hook of the associated needle and causes a reverse plated stitch to be made at that point. There is a second battery of cams 40 which determines which of the two yarns held out of the needle hook (in the case of three yarns knitted simultaneously) is to appear on the face of the fabric. All the cams 21, 40 are movable radially into action. The three yarns B, R, P are fed in at different angles as shown, the feeder for the yarn P being nearest the stitch cam. This results in normal plating, with the yarn B at the face of the fabric, the yarn P at the back and the yarn R sandwiched in between. To assist in maintaining this relationship the sill of the throat 17 slopes towards the feeder for the yarn B, which is fed in from the far side of a removable division 42. To bring the yarn R to the face, at any place, the corresponding instruments 12 are raised and the yarn B is laid on their points. The instruments are lowered at the same angle as the feed of the yarn B to retain the yarn B and allow the yarns P, R to be laid in the needle hooks in the position shown in Fig. 5 when the yarn R will appear at the face of the finished fabric. Similarly, to bring the yarn P to the face the corresponding instruments are raised to intercept yarns B and R. In this case the yarn B appears at the back of the fabric. The cams 40 determine which individual instrument engages the yarn R or misses it as the case may be and thus determine whether the yarn P or the yarn R appears at the face at that particular point. If no cams 40 are in action, selected instruments still engage the yarn R, but are taken out of action by cam 22 before they reach the yarn P. If cams 40 are in action the corresponding instruments are lowered at the same angle as the yarn R so as not to interfere with it being laid in the needle hook. By these means plated hosiery fabric can be knitted in which each of the three yarns appears at the face of at least one loop, while at least two yarns appear at the face in the same wale. The.margins of the patterns may be inclined to the wales. The instruments may be used to hold yarns in normal plating relationship, by causing a cam 24 to project the corresponding jacks 13. Fig. 1 (not shown) shows a circular machine with pattern drum and associated parts for operating on cams, yarn guides, &c. to which the invention is applied.
