461,472. Four-stroke engines; valves; regulating. BONFA, A. April 20, 1936, No.11258. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In engines having a piston valve and sleeve valve reciprocating in a cylinder at the side of the working cylinder, as described in Specification 418,616, the common inlet and exhaust port 7 leading from the working cylinder 3 to the valve cylinder 4, and the auxiliary exhaust port 11 leading into the valve cylinder, are brought nearer together by providing a passage 8 connecting the port 11 to the auxiliary exhaust port 9 opening into the working cylinder. Fig. 1 shows the main piston 5, valve piston 17, and sleeve valve 16 at the time the auxiliary exhaust is occurring through ports and passages 9, 8, 11, 20, 18, 21, 14. The main exhaust takes place through ports 7, 20, and 19 leading to an outlet, not shown. Fig. 2 shows the position of the parts towards the end of the suction stroke, the inlet of the charge taking place from above the piston valve through the ports 20 and 7, while some of the auxiliary exhaust is returned to the working cylinder by way of ports 14, 21, and 15 which is in communication with the port 7. This readmission of exhaust gases is especially used at low speeds, or high speeds, or high altitudes, a throttle valve being provided in the auxiliary exhaust passage for regulating the pressure therein, and consequently the amount of exhaust readmitted.
