Abstract

461,211. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FRANCIS, V. J., and RYDE, J. W. Nov. 28, 1935, Nos. 33049/35 and 11079/36. [Class 39 (i)] A lamp or other device of the extra-high-pressure type has a resistant vitreous sheath of crosssection not greater ' than 38 sq. mms., e.g. of quartz, between the discharge column and the sealed envelope, and surrounding the column so closely as to constrict it. The pressure in the device is greater than 2 atmospheres and may be between 10 atm. and 100 or 200 atm. With a cylindrical sheath the envelope may be cylindrical or may have a diameter greater in the middle than at the ends. The ends of the sheath may be ground to fit closely against the ends of the envelope, and the envelopemay be made in two halves, sealed together after the sheath is inserted. In a modification, as shown, the sheath 4 has expanded portions 11 about the electrodes and is supported in the envelope 1 by knobs or spikes 13. The enlarged portion 9 is produced by blowing after the sheath is inserted so that the ends 12 become adjacent the ends of the envelope. Specifications 439,995 and 458,604 are referred to.
