Abstract

461,180. Separating dust from gases. ZANDER, M. June 11, 1935, No. 16849. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] In apparatus for separating dust from gases and vapours, the dust laden gas is passed through a chamber provided with sets of oppositely - disposed inclined baffles 2a-2e. The gas is thus caused to follow a zigzag path so that at the end of each inclined surface, the dust particles are projected on to the opposing wall of the chamber and the top side of the succeeding inclined surface. Curved plates 5 screening the undersurface of the baffles promote the production of eddy currents and assist in the deposition of dust. The distance between the edges of the baffles and the adjacent wall may be diminished in the direction of gas-flow. In a modification, the gas flows through oppositely directed channels Ql, Q2, Fig. 4, separated by a chamber bounded internally by the curved wall 5. Dust is deposited on the substantially vertical surfaces k which are irrigated by liquid supplied by a pipe a. The irrigated surface on which the dust is deposited is profiled by corrugations &c. to facilitate the adhesion of the dust-particles. The irrigating liquid is guided from a reservoir between the edge of the vertically adjustable surface 2 and the spacing wall 10. The spent liquid is collected in the sump 13 the roof of which is defined by the bent-in edge 14<a> of the bottom 14 of the main chamber.
