Abstract

457,784. Dust separators. WARING, H., 94, Cambridge Road, Blundellsands, Liverpool, and GOODLASS WALL & LEAD INDUSTRIES, Ltd., 3, New London Street, London. June 4, 1935, Nos. 16227 and 26632. [Class 23] Suspended solids are separated from gases while passing through a passage with baffles extending inwardly from the walls and alternately from opposite sides, so that the gas follows a zigzag path. The baffles form shelves for the collection of solids and have an inclination sufficiently steep to cause the solids to slip downwards under gravity if the flow of gases is discontinued or if the collected solids are disturbed. The apparatus consists of outer and inner conical vessels 11, 12 with cylindrical tops. The outer vessel has diametrically opposite inlets 14, 15 and vertical partitions 16, 17 divide the annular space between the vessels into two parts and ensure that the gases shall move down without undue cyclonic motion. The vessel 11 carries inward conical baffles 21 extending between outward conical baffles 22 carried by the vessel 12. A third conical vessel 32 may be added and this carries baffles on its outer side alternating with baffles on the inner side of the vessel 12. Conical baffles 35 on the inner side of the vessel 32 alternate with baffles on the central rod 27. Below the vessels 12, 32 is arranged a conical baffle 23 and a series of conical louvres 24 which permit dust to pass to the chamber 25. The gas enters at the inlets 14, 15, passes downwards between the vessels 11, 12 and is turned inwards and upwards by the cones and louvres 24. It passes upwards on both sides of the vessel 32, and between additional baffles 39, 40, 41 to the outlet 30. The separated solids drop through the louvres to the chamber 25; this action may be assisted by vibrating the apparatus. The first Provisional Specification states that separation may be caused by cyclonic action as well as by the changes of direction as the gases meet the baffles. Specifications 5710/11, [Class 51 (ii)], 109,315, [Class 46], and 441,900, [Group XXVIII], are referred to.
