Abstract

460,462. Vehicle couplings; brakes; hinges. BATE, B. DIXON-. Oct. 17, 1935, No. 28685. [Class 103 (v)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] In a tractor-trailer coupling a ball c on the end of the trailer draw-bar a, Fig. 1, is adapted to be engaged within a two - part socket d, e on the tractor, the hemispherical parts d, e being hinged together at and being lined with rubber p for shock-absorbing and sound-minimizing purposes. In order to provide for universal movement . the socket is rotatable in a bracket h on the tractor frame g about a vertical pin f, while the stem c<1> of the ball c is movable within a vertical slot j, j<1> formed in the parts d, e. The halves d, e are formed with bevelled meeting edges and are maintained in the closed position by a screw n, mounted upon a pivoted yoke k and prevented from undesired rotation by a spring-controlled pivoted pawl engaging a serrated collar 3. The trailer is fitted with a pivoted skid q, Fig. 4, adapted to support the uncoupled trailer and, in its operative position, as shown, to engage a bell-crank lever s, which effects a. displacement of the draw-bar a to apply the trailer brakes. A hand-lever t connected to the bell-crank lever s permits manual application of the brakes.
