Abstract

A new alkaloid is isolated from ergot by (1) extracting crude ergot with a dilute mineral acid, precipitating with weak alkali, and extracting a solution of the precipitate in an aromatic hydrocarbon with dilute mineral acid, followed by precipitation with weak alkali; (2) extracting crude ergot with an aromatic hydrocarbon, treating with aqueous alkali hydroxide, acidifying the alkaline solution with a dilute mineral acid and adding a weak alkali to the filtrate; the precipitated product may be purified by treatment with an aromatic hydrocarbon, extraction with a dilute mineral acid and precipitation with a weak alkali. The crude ergot used as starting material may be replaced by the water-soluble or water-insoluble fractions thereof. The product may be further purified by treatment with methyl alcohol in which it is sparingly soluble, or by crystallization from benzene, dilute aqueous acetone, ethyl acetate, methylethyl ketone or alcohol. Its properties are described.
