Abstract
Penicillin preparations are purified by treatment in aqueous solution, of a water-soluble salt thereof, with a water-soluble bisulphite, at a temperature below 20 DEG C., and rapidly extracting the purified penicillin with a water-immiscible solvent, for example, peroxide free ether, amyl acetate, butyl acetate or chloroform. The precipitated impurities are preferably removed before extraction of the penicillin with the solvent. In the examples, the crude barium salt of penicillin is treated with calcium or sodium bisulphite, the precipitate filtered off and the filtrate extracted with amyl acetate. The extract is freed from sulphur dioxide and treated with aqueous chalk or barium hydroxide to obtain the calcium or barium salt which is dried by the lyophilic method.
