Abstract

Penicillin is purified by treating penicillin or a salt of penicillin with procaine or a salt of procaine in solution in a solvent in which procaine penicillin is substantially insoluble, separating the precipitated procaine penicillin and suspending it in a mixture of water and a substantially water-immiscible organic solvent, hydrolyzing the procaine penicillin under acid conditions or under alkaline conditions at or below room temperature, extracting the liberated penicillin into the organic solvent and recovering therefrom the purified penicillin. As solvent there may be used butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, butyl acetate, amyl acetate and chloroform. Detailed examples are given. Specification 607,004 is referred to.
